ABSTRACT: Adolescents are an important and potential resources for the prevention of STD's and HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of structured teaching program in Improving knowledge of school going adolescents on HIV/AIDS. The study area was Mechinagar Municipality of Jhapa district . The design of the study was pre-pottest with control group design. The study population was 10-19 years of school going adolescents studying in standard 9 and 10 of government schools in Mechinagar Municipality. The required sample size was 136. The sample size taken in this study was 114 individual for intervention group and 145 individuals for control group. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was adopted in the study. The tools and techniques used in the study was self-administered semi structured questionnaire and intervention package. The data was analyzed using SPSS. The sex ratio of male: female was 0.53 among intervention group and 0.58 among the control group. Most of the respondents were of age 16 years followed by 15 years. Most of the participants among intervention group were Janajati(27.6%) and most of the participants among control group were Rajbansi(29.2). All of the respondents had heard about HIV/AIDS. The most reported source of the information was teacher. 91.7% of the respondents from the intervention group had heard about condom and 90.3 had heard from the control group. Although the respondents had a fair knowledge on the mode of transmission, 43.4% and 49.3% of the intervention and control group respectively reported that AIDS can be transmitted through a mosquito bite. However among the intervention group only 13.8% reported it to be a mode of transmission of HIV/AIDS in posttest. The study found a strong association between the sex and the knowledge on HIV/AIDS. The effectiveness of structured teaching program was evaluated using a paired -test (2tailed) using the SPSS software. There was a significant difference between the score on knowledge of HIV/AIDS in pretest and posttest of the intervention group. There was no significant difference between the intervention and control group in pretest where p=0.253 but there was a significant difference between the intervention and control group in posttest where p=0.000.
