N1 - Thesis Report N2 - ABSTRACT: Background: Parenting style is a strategy that parents use for child rearing and selfesteem refers to the perception about own self. A good parenting is essential for positive growth and development of adolescents which eventually will enhance the self-esteem of adolescents. The aim of this study was to assess the perceived parenting style and self-esteem among adolescents of public schools in Bharatpur, Chitwan. Methodology: A quantitative, cross sectional, descriptive analytical research design was used. The population comprised of adolescents of public schools in Bharatpur. Probability multistage simple random sampling technique was used and sampling was done in two stages. Data was collected from 323 adolescents using scale of parenting developed by Gafoor & Kurukkan and Rosenberg Self -esteem scale. The data was entered into software epi-data 3.1 and further descriptive and Inferential statistics (chi square) were analyzed using SPSS version 16. Findings: The results depicts that 52% parents were high responsive towards their child and 51.7% parents were highly controlling. Similarly, 43.7% parents practiced authoritative parenting style followed by 39.9% neglectful parenting style. In addition, majority (68.4%) adolescents revealed high self-esteem and statistically significant association was present between mother parenting style and self-esteem of adolescents. Additionally, significant association was found between age of adolescents and mothers’ parenting style as well as occupation of mother and mothers’ parenting style. Also, significant association present between birth order and fathers’ parenting style. Conclusion: The results showed that the most perceived parenting style among adolescents was authoritative parenting style followed by neglectful parenting style and authoritarian parenting style was the least practiced parenting style among adolescents of Bharatpur Metropolitan City. Majority of adolescents have high self-esteem and perceived mother’s parenting style has significant association with self-esteem of adolescents.
