N2  - ABSTRACT:

Introduction: Nepal is a developing country in which migration of Nepali workers in abroad is increasing every year. This phenomenon has positive impact in socioeconomic conditions but has negative impact on family’s mental health. The wives of migrants may deal with loneliness, increased responsibilities, psychological stress etc. which may results in depression.  

Methodology: A cross-sectional study design was used for this study to assess the prevalence of depression among 255 wives of migrant workers in Shuklagandaki municipality, Tanahun. Multistage sampling technique was adopted and face to face interview was done during the study. The Center for Epidemiological Studies (CESD) scale was used to assess the prevalence of depression. Data were entered in Epi-data and analyzed using SPSS version 20 statistics software. The informed consent from each participant was taken before administrating the questionnaire. 

Result: The study depicts that one fourth (25.1%) of the participants had depression. Regarding socio-demographic and economic characteristics, Ethnicity, Education, Family type, Number of children, Occupation of participant and  Family debt were found to be significantly associated with depression among left behind wives of migrant workers (p <0.05). Among participants who reported health illness within 6 months, 45% of them had depression. Regarding autonomy and migration related factors, social support and destination country of husband were statistically significant with depression but behavioral related factors hadn’t any association with the prevalence of depression in our study.  

Conclusion: This study concludes that one fourth of the wives of migrant workers had depression. The concerned authorities should plan mobile psychological consultation clinics and awareness campaigns in high-migration areas, particularly for left-behind women.
