Since the detection of the first AIDS case in Nepal in1988, this country has progressed from a low prevalence to one with so called concentrated epidemic in certain sub-group of the population. National Center for AIDS and STDs Control (NCASC)-2005 estimated that 70,256 Nepalese people living with HIV/AIDS in Nepal at the end of 2005. Objective: The study aims to assess the knowledge of HIV/AIDS and sexual behavior among street sex workers in Kathmandu Valley. Methodology: Altogether 50 street sex workers were interviewed by using non probability sampling method. Semi structured interview guideline served as the main study instrument. Result: Mean age of sex worker was 27.5 years. The study found that higher percentage of (98%) respondents had heard about HIV/AIDS. However few numbers of respondents had misconception that one could contract HIV through Mosquito bites and kissing. A large number of the respondents (90%) said HIV could be transmitted through unsafe sex. Most of the respondents (80%) used condoms always 52% of the respondents had multiple (more than four) sex partners. Majority (64%) of the sex workers had existence of homosexual relationship. Conclusion: Majority of the respondents had heard about HIV/AIDS with few misconceptions on the route of transmission. UR - http://nhrc.gov.np/contact/ ER -
