520 | _aABSTRACT: Alopecia is a dermatological disorder, in which a person loses hair to some or all extent. Plant derived medicines have been under investigation for hair growth promoting activity. Present study was conducted to perform phytochemical screening and to evaluate the hair growth promoting activity of Maharanga bicolor. Petroleum ether and ethanol extracts of rhizomes of Maharanga bicolor was compared with the standard Minoxidil treatment. Extracts in the concentration of 2% and 5% were prepared by incorporating in liquid paraffin and applied topically to the denuded skin of rats for 30 days. Minoxidil 2% solution was applied as positive control for comparison. The time in days required for hair growth initiation as well as completion was recorded. The length of hair was measured in 15th, 20th, 25th and 30th day of the application of the sample and was recorded. The result was interpreted as meanĀ±S.D. At day 23 blind investigations was done to determine the hair growth among different rats. The results showed the hair initiation time of 2% petroleum ether was on 9th day and Minoxidil was on 8th day and that of control was on 12th day. The hair growth completion time was seen after 22nd day in 2% and 5% petroleum ether extract, after 20th day in Minoxidil and 27th day in control. Blind investigation reported the hair growth of the extracts were superior to control. Hair length of extracts was superior to the control and similar with the standard Minoxidil. The study provides a huge support to the traditional claim that M. bicolor acts as hair growth promoter. Both of the Petroleum ether and ethanol extract were found to potentiate the hair growth than control and similar to Minoxidil. Phytochemical screening of the petroleum ether and ethanol extracts of rhizomes Maharanga bicolor revealed the presence of glycosides, carbohydrates, fats and fixed oils, resins, phytosterols, phenols, diterpenes, proteins and amino acids.
