Summary: | ABSTRACT: The study is a comparative study of the "Violence Among Secondary Girl Students Of Public And Private Schools". In Nepal, violence against girls and women is very much common. The general objective of the study is to compare violence among the secondary level girl students of the public and private schools. The total sample size of the study is 226 but due to absenteeism and some did not agree to fill the questionnaire only 212respondents are taken for this study. The respondents are girls of classes eight, nine and ten of public and private schools. The girls are from age 11-18. Respondents belonging to Brahmin and Chettri castes are more than other castes. In the private schools there were no disadvantage Group students. The private schools have more number of Hindu girl students than the public schools and only few of them are of other religions in both public as well as the private schools. The status of knowledge and attitude towards violence against girls is better in the respondents of both public and private school girls because 100% girls answered that they have heard about violence against girls but according to the categorization some of them have good and fair knowledge. Most of the girls recognized rape as the violence whereas girls' trafficking was the second most familiar forms of violence to the girls. Only 33% of public school girls and 30.7% of private schools are aware on reproductive right, which is very low percentage. The result shows that Among the total girls i.e. 212 including both of public and private schools 166 girls feel that they have experienced violence and 46 girls think that they have not ever experienced violence. The girls have mostly experienced the violence incidences in public places where most of the victims said that they face violence at streets.41.2% girls from public schools face violence at street and 45.8% girls from private schools face violence at street. Most of the girls think that the violence incidence will affect their future life. Only 31.92% girls think that these violence incidences may not disturb their future life. Comparing the private and public schools there is a difference in education between the respondents. 6.6% of the girls of public schools said that they are facing inequality in terms of education. While asking the further questions the girls of public schools said that their brothers are admitted in the private schools while they are studying in the public schools. The other forms of inequalities are more or less similar between the girls of public and private schools but as a whole the number of girls who are facing inequalities within the household is more of public schools than that of private schools. Maximum girls from public schools said that they were not allowed to see and touch male, which is 26 .41% while 16.98% girls of private schools answered the same. 87.09% girls of both public and private schools feel disturbance in their present life due to violence Among the total population only 31 girls (14.6%) said that they have health problems due to violence while the rest that is 181(85.4%) girls said that they are not suffering from any health problems due to violence. The respondent within the educational institute mostly suffer from scold and insult in both public and private schools. Girls from the public schools said that they are even sexually harassed but the number is very few. .5% girls of public schools feel that they are insulted and scolded in schools while 6.6%girls of private schools think so.4.7%girls of public school said that they are ignored in schools in comparison to the male students. According to them male students are given priority in different tasks. in both public and private schools male teacher comes in the first position as perpetrators within the educational institution, which is 5.2% and 6.6% respectively. Comparing public and private schools the girls of public schools are more victimized within the educational institution than that of the private schools. Only 31 girls (14.6%) said that they have health problems due to violence while the rest that is 181(85.4%) girls said that they are not suffering from any health problems due to violence. 70% of public schools and 13.33% of private schools. Likewise depression is second largest health problems in the girls of both schools which is 36.66% in public school girls and 13.33% in private school girls respectively. Among the total respondents 39.28% girls from the public schools share the cases while 39.79% girls from the private schools share the violence incidences. Likewise only 1.02 % girls of private schools report the violence incidences. Most of the respondents said that uneducation is mainly responsible for causing violence against girls. Uneducation was followed by gender inequality, unawareness, unemployment, ignorance, economic status, religion, tradition and cultures, no regulation of strict laws and so on. Most of the respondents said that there is not only a single factor responsible for violence but many factors are responsible for it. To prevent violence against girls and women most of the respondents focused on awareness. 41.03% girls of public schools and 38.67% girls of private schools think that awareness is very much necessary to prevent violence. The study gives the clear picture of the knowledge and attitude towards violence against girls of secondary level girl students of both the public and private schools. More respondents of public schools are victimized than that pf the private schools respondents. Lack of education, no strict laws, social cultures and traditions are the causes of violence and by making people aware and improving women's status violence could be controlled. |
