Description
Summary:ABSTRACT: Mental health is state balance between thoughts, feeling and behavior. Mental illness is not uncommon in children. Considerable proportions of school, dropout children have some kind of mental illness. The objective of the study was to find out the mental health status and its associated factors among higher secondary school students of Devchuli Municipality, Nawalparasi. In this descriptive cross sectional study 400 respondents were selected with probability based cluster sampling technique. the data was collected from self-administered questionnaire, general Health Questionnaire(GHQ-12) during the time period July 2 to July 29,2017. The collected data were analyzed with the help of statistical package for Social Science(SPSS) version 16 by using descriptive and inferential statistic. The Overall response rate was 97% (387 out of 400 students). The mean age of respondent was 17.33 years and the overall prevalence of poor mental health status was 31.3%. The factors significantly affecting mental health status were living alone (AOR= 4.216 CI= 1.395-12.739),sleeping<6 hours (AOR=3.720 CI=1.916-7.221), class absenteeism (AOR=3.562 CI=1.511-8.397),self reported poor academic performance (AOR=2.459 CI= 1.469-4.118), inadequate perceived coping capacity in stressful events (AOR=2.990CI=1.430-6.252) and supportive parents (AOR=7.069 CI=2.051-24.363). it's concluded that one third of higher secondary school students have poor mental health status and poor mental health status tends to be associative with sleeping hours, accommodation, classes, absenteeism., self reported academic performance, perceived coping capacity, and supportive parents. The higher level of poor mental health status warrants need for interventions like social and psychological support to improve the quality of life these higher secondary school students.
