Summary:ABSTRACT: Neonatal health is a vital component of the National Reproductive Health Strategy. Newborn care practices play an important role to improve the health of neonates. The general objective of this study was to identify new born care practices among post-natal mothers of under four-month babies. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in six wards (Dakhaquady1,2,3,4,5,6) of Pyuthan municipality in Pyuthan district. Total 80 respondents were taken from different immunization center of these six wards. Semi-structured questionnaire was developed and interview of mothers of under four-month babies was done. For analysis, all the obtained data was entered and analyzed using SPSS v 16.0. Bivariate analysis was used to see the association between the key variables and new born care practice. It was found that around 62% of the respondent were less than 20 years at their first pregnancy. 87.5% of the respondents had done four ANC visit. 95% of the respondents had taken iron and folic acid during pregnancy. 97.5% of respondent had taken albendazole during their pregnancy. 75% of respondent had delivered their babies at health institution and only 25% had delivered their babies at home. 81.2% of respondent had used sterilized instrument for cord cutting,16.2 % had used new blade and 2.5% had used knife for cord cutting. 90% had not given pre-lacteal feeding to their babies and 10% of them had given prelacteal feeding to their babies. Prelacteal feeding was Ghee and honey. All the respondent had given immunization to their babies based on the age of babies according to national immunization schedule. In bivariate analysis, regarding the umbilical cord practice, it was found that there was the association between umbilical cord care practices and place of delivery with p-value (0.003). Similarly, there was association between delivery conducted by and umbilical cord care practices with p-value (0.003). Likewise, there is also association between general cleanliness and parity of birth with p-value (0.032). In this study around 25% of deliveries were in house, for good coverage of institutional deliveries awareness program on importance of safe delivery practices should be given.
