The way of rearing and caring of children with autism depends upon the way of perception of mothers and there is gap in literature regarding the detailed accounts of mother's perception regarding autism in Nepal. Hence, this study was undertaken to explore lived experiences of mothers raising children with autism. Qualitative phenomenological study design was used and a total of nine mothers with autistic children were selected purposively for the study. Data was collected from 8/8/2018 to 7/9/2018 using in-depth interview guidelines. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's seven steps of analysis. The voluminous information was reduced to smaller unit after coding and categorizing. Concepts were identified by first and second level of content analysis. Findings were presented in groups. Findings of the study revealed that mothers raising the children with autism encountered numerous problems in their daily life. They felt physically exhausted and had sleep disturbance due to continuous supervision and close attention of their child. Emotional problems such as denial, anger, upset/sadness and worry were also common among the mothers. They experienced denial during the diagnosis period, became anger towards child for their abnormal behaviors, were upset/sad toward child's present condition and were worried for the child's future. In addition, all mothers faced social problems such as social blame, social isolation and ignorance from their relatives and society due to their child's behaviors and disability. Further economic problem was also experienced by mothers due to job loss and costly medical treatment as a result they became unable to utilize treatment modalities for their children. To deal with the situation, mothers shared that they had adopted various coping strategies such as respite care (admitted child in care center), problem focused strategies (i.e. social support, intervene treatment and initiated a care center), religious coping (visited temple and worship god hoping for miracle) and positive coping (being optimistic, keeping some determination for child and positive reframing about their child) in their everyday life.In conclusion, mothers raising the children with autism experience various physical, emotional, social and economic problems in their daily life. Hence, the health care professionals need to pay more attention to address the problems of mothers while treating their autistic children. Nepal government also needs to formulate policy for the rehabilitation of autistic children in the society. Keywords: Lived Experiences, Children, Autism
