520 |a ABSTRACT: Diabetic hypoglycemia is one of the acute complications of diabetes and is a true medical emergency which requires prompt recognition and treatment to prevent organ and brain damage. It could also lead to neurological damage, trauma, cardiovascular events and even death. Therefore descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out with the main objective to find out the awareness regarding hypoglycemia among diabetic clients. Using non - probability purposive sampling method, 73 diabetic clients attending Medical Out Patient Department (OPD), Medical ward and Diabetic clinic of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) were selected and data was collected using pretested structured interview schedule. Collected data was processed and analyzed using descriptive statistics as frequency distribution & percentile and inferential statistical method after entering the data in Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Findings of the study revealed that 35.6% of the total respondents had adequate, while 24.7% had moderately adequate and 39.7% had inadequate knowledge regarding hypoglycemia. This study also showed that the knowledge level of the respondents regarding hypoglycemia is associated with the variables like educational status (P=0.016), participation in diabetic counseling classes (P=0.000) and experience of hypoglycemic episodes (P=0.000). In conclusion more than half of the diabetic clients were aware of hypoglycemia. However they had less knowledge regarding severe hypoglycemia, complications of hypoglycemia and diabetic identification tag. Hence, the awareness programs on hypoglycemia should provide complete information regarding hypoglycemia, its severity, symptoms, management, complications and prevention. Similarly concerned authorities should pay an attention to the benefit of use of diabetic identification tag and should encourage its use among the diabetic clients.
