Summary:ABSTRACT: Advances in technology and the advent of social media have led to the emergence of a new phenomenon - cyberbullying. The long term effects of cyberbullying are not only devastating as the bullying situation occurs, but also usually affect victims and perpetrators into adulthood. The possible adverse effects of cyberbullying can be physical, psychological, or in academic performance. There is an urgent necessity to increase awareness about this among children, students, teachers and educators to prevent being harassed online. Research on the effects of cyberbullying is inadequate, and further empirical work is necessary to evaluate the consequences on mental health. The aim of this study was to find out the behavioral intentions about cyberbullying among secondary school students. This study also provides insight on effect of an educational intervention on increasing their awareness in order to protect themselves in future. This study was conducted in three phases. In the first phase, situation analysis survey was done to assess knowledge, attitude and behavioural measures related to cyberbullying. Private schools of Lalitpur Metropolitan City were selected purposively. Students of grade 9 and 10 chosen randomly and were interviewed using structured questionnaire technique. In the second phase, formative research (focus group discussion) was conducted and educational package was developed based on the findings. In the third phase, education package developed in phase II was implemented among the participants of intervention and control group. First of all, pretest was done in both groups. Then an educational session was conducted in intervention group only. Post test was done after 4 weeks in both intervention and control groups. Effect of package was evaluated using quasi- experimental study design. This study was conducted applying Theory of Planned Behaviour as theoretical framework. Results from situation analysis survey showed that majority of the participants (62.3%) had knowledge score below median. Similarly, more than half (51.6%) had negative attitude towards cyberbullying. Regarding behavioural measures, 21.8% participants had cyberbullied others and 40.3% had cyberbullied via social networking sites. Likewise, 12.4% of total participants reported to be cyberbullied in the past 2-3 months, among them 51.5% were bullied via social networking sites and 41% said they felt angry post the incident. Majority of the participants feels it's a bad thing and something should be done to stop it. Nearly half of the participants did not know whether the victims of cyberbullying were more or less affected than the victims of traditional bullying. Majority said there will be no effect by banning internet in school (75.2%) and by banning mobile phones in school (77.2%). Majority of them said that they had lessons on cyberbullying at school. The result of this quasi-experimental study presented that adolescents with higher tendency to have negative attitude towards cyberbullying, considered themselves more capable to avoid this behaviour (perceived behavioural control) and intend to perform behaviours that prevent this from happening (intention) whereas adolescents did not feel more expectations from those who were important to him/her for preventing cyberbullying behaviour (subjective norm). So, it can be concluded that an educational program based on theory of planned behaviour is effective in increasing the knowledge, attitude and behaviour intention for cyberbullying prevention. This quasi-experimental study provided evidence on cyberbullying intervention program, which can reduce the burden of perpetration among school adolescents.
