Summary: | ABSTRACT: The study titled Socio-economic and health status of Dalit and Non-dalits in Damhi VDC in Mahottari district conduct for partial fulfilment of Bachelor of Public Health. The main objectives of this study was to identify the Socio-economic and Health status of Dalit and Non-Dalit in Damhi VDC of Mahottari District. It is descriptive study involves a detailed questionnaire interviewed 100 respondents from 50 Dalits and 50 Non-Dalits in the Damhi VDCs were interviewed. The main findings of the study are: Educationally, the surveyed communities have very low achievement, with the female population representing the lowest graph. Starting from the high school level, the higher education level is still lower. Therefore, intervention in the form of increased educational opportunities leading to higher level of awareness is recommended. • Economically Dalits communities live in absolute poverty with the majority being landless or possessing uneconomic land holdings. There is no job opportunity beyond doing low paid manual labour. • The technical skill in traditional or other occupations is low and traditional occupations are hard hit by the availability of cheaper factory products in the market. • Health wise, there is preponderant superstition in Dhami-Jhankri tradition, especially in case of Dalits it is chronic and people have benefited very minimally from the hospital - health post services. The hygienic condition is deplorable with over 70 percent people having no latrines and, in the prevailing destitution, the nutritional level is low. • In terms of caste factor there is a high degree of discrimination in various forms including entrance in hotels, shops and temples. Some higher caste people still sprinkle water to purify themselves when touched by the untouchables, and untouchables are not hired even as peons in public offices. • Status of women is lower than men in all the communities in all respects. The conclusion of this study is that the economic condition influences the educational and health status, education influences the economy by indicating the general skill and knowledge, and health influences the capability which again affects the productive process. |
