520 | |a SUMMARY: Tobacco is one of the biggest challenges to public health today. It kills nearly 5.4 million people globally each year. Around the world, nearly 5.4 million people every year die from lung cancer, Heart disease and other illnesses. The WHO estimates that in the 21st century, about 1 billion people around the world will die from smoking -ten times the number killed throughout the 20th century. This number could increase to more than eight million a year by 2030. Tobacco consumption is devastating problem globally. Especially the problem has reached its peak in developing countries than developed countries. Tobacco use is decreasing in developed countries, but increasing in developing countries. Especially this problem is seen in urban areas of developing countries where the teenage groups are the major victim. It has been crucial to find out the burden of tobacco consumption especially in urban areas like Kathmandu where the school students are major victims of this problem. By finding status of the tobacco consumption among school students in selected study site it will somehow help the policy makers to implement the program. The objective of this study was to find out status of tobacco consumption (both smoked and non-smoked) among class 10 students of selected 3 private schools of Kathmandu district and also to identify factors affecting tobacco consumption among the study population. Type of study design used was descriptive, cross sectional and quantitative method was used to collect data. The study was conducted in 3 selected private schools of Kathmandu district and study population was class 10 students of selected study sites. The collected data was analyzed by using SPSS software. From the study, it was found that 45.33% students were tobacco consumers. Among those users, 25.33% students were consumers of smoked tobacco products and 20% were found to be consuming non-smoked tobacco products. It was found that among tobacco consumers almost half of the respondents were consuming tobacco more than one time in a week. Maximum no. of respondents was found to be moderate consumer of tobacco products i.e. 55.88%. Gender wise, it was seen that more no. of male (33.33%) were tobacco consumers than female (12%). Almost half of the respondents (52.63%) were moderate consumers of smoked tobacco products but maximum no. of respondents was high consumer of non-smoked tobacco products i.e. 66.66%. Similarly, 38.66% of the respondents said that peer pressure influence use of tobacco products, followed by easy availability of tobacco products (32.66%) and family stress (14.66%). From the above findings, it is clear that the tobacco consumption problem is at high level in schools of Kathmandu district. A 45% tobacco consumer at schools is not a joke. So, it's mandatory that appropriate action be taken from policy level, school level and household level to combat this problem. | ||
