Summary:ABSTRACT: Introduction: The study was carried out in diagnosed patients of hemorrhoids and fistula-in-ano, two common ano-rectal diseases, receiving service from the Shalya OPD of TUATH, Kritipur with an aim of identifying the general risk factors. Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data were collected from 50 patients by personal interview using semi-structured questionnaire. Results: Most of the respondents are of productive years of life, i.e. 21-50 years. The hemorrhoid is prevalent in 72% of the target population, and fistula-in-ano in 26%. There is strong relation of the nature of food, work, knowledge, hesitancy to seek medical, and availability of service. 84% of the patients present with the history of constipation. 58% of the people hesitate to seek medical help due to the fact that the problem is in private part of the body. The mean duration of having had the problem is 1 year and 5 months. 84% of the patients do not know well about the disease. For 62 % of the patients, medical help starts from clinic or dispensary. In 86%, about 18 weeks is spent before starting to take medical help. Conclusion: The risk factors to hemorrhoids and fistula-in-ano are a food that cause constipation, work that require either prolonged sitting or standing, history of trauma, hesitancy to get medical help in the case of problems affecting in the anal region, low level of understanding about the disease, and difficulty in availability of the reliable medical help.
