520 | |a ABSTRACT: The study on knowledge about TB among drug users was conducted among the drug users in Kathmandu Valley, which consists of 4 different centers, i.e. Youth Vision Integrated Health Service Center and Youth Vision "Program for Female", in Kathmandu and Youth Vision Crisis Care Center and Youth Vision Margins to Mainstream in Lalitpur. The study design was descriptive cross sectional and the sample size was 63 with 45 male and 18 female drug users. The highest percentages of drug users were in the age group of 25-29. Most of the drug users were of Hindu religion and were Newars. Most of the respondents were unmarried and stayed in a family. Most of the respondents had completed only up to the intermediate level of education. Most of the respondents were involved in some kind of occupation. Above 95 percent of the respondents were found with the habit of smoking and 43 percent of them with the habit of drinking alcohol. Some 13 percent of the respondents had family history of drug use. All the respondents had heard about TB and the main source of information was the print media. About 91% of the respondent knew that TB was a communicable disease while only 33 percent had the knowledge about the causes of TB. The knowledge regarding the types of TB, TB infection and TB disease was very low. Most of the respondents were familiar with the symptoms of TB, transmission of TB as well as TB diagnosis method. About 97 percent of the respondent knew that TB can be cured but had no knowledge about the duration of treatment. The respondents had little knowledge regarding the preventive measures of TB. About 70 percent of the respondents had the knowledge about people at risk for TB but not about the self risk for TB. The respondents had low knowledge regarding DOTS. Overall the knowledge regarding TB was found to be low. Four out of five drug service providers had been in contact with drug users with TB and according to them drug users are at risk for TB. Some rehabilitation centers were offering TB and general health related knowledge to drug users. According to the service providers, the health seeking behavior among drug users is very low and overall their knowledge regarding TB is generally low because they even neglect about it. So the level of knowledge about TB among drug users was found to be low. | ||
