Summary, etc. ABSTRACT: <br/><br/> Introduction: Nicotine is a highly addictive substance found in tobacco. Since most of the public health studies focused only on psychological and behavioral factors associated with tobacco smoking this study aims to assess the Smoking dependence and stages of change of quitting smoking and attitude of smokers towards quitting smoking in Bharatpur Metropolitan. <br/><br/>Methodology: A community based cross-sectional analytical study was conducted between June to November 2019 among 280 smokers aged 15-69 years in Bharatpur metropolitan. Simple random sampling was used to the select sample. A structured questionnaire was administered during face-to-face interviews. Smoking dependence among participants was assessed using the six-item Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). Chi-square test was performed to assess the association between nicotine dependence and independent variables and variables significant in Chi-square test were further analyzed by using binary logistic regression to assess the strength of association. <br/><br/>Results: Among 280 respondents, smoking dependence was high to very high in half of the respondents and based on the heaviness of smoking index, dependency was medium to high among two-third respondents. Almost three out of ten respondents were prepared for smoking cessation. It was observed age, marital status, years duration of smoking, monthly expenditure on smoking, most often smoke place, having health problem due to smoking, thought of quitting smoking, attempts of quitting smoking in past 24 hours and stage of smokers (UOR=2.623, 95%CI (1.307-5.264) and (UOR=3.654, 95%CI (1.583-8.430) were found to be significantly influencing on both nicotine dependence and heaviness of smoking index. Majority of respondents responded reasons for not want to quit smoking was craving and not believing on quitting. Quitting smoking was motivated mainly by to save money and health concerns. <br/><br/>Conclusion: The high smoking dependence identified throughout this study highlights a public health problem. There is a need for further analysis and study also indicates that there is a demand for supportive counselling for quitting smoking.
