Summary, etc. ABSTRACT: Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common healthcare associated infections which has great impact on patient safety that affects the quality of health care outcomes globally, particularly in developing countries. It can also cause prolonged hospital stay, reduced quality of life, increased mortality, additional cost for patients and their family, and rising health care cost. Knowledge and practices of nurses play a key role for the prevention of spread of infection. The purpose of this study to identify the knowledge and practice regarding prevention of surgical site infection among nurse at tertiary level hospital of Kathmandu district. A descriptive cross-sectional study design wasconducted among 109 nurses working in Shree Birendra Hospital, Chhauni. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to selectrequired sample. A semi-structured, self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data analysis was done by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 and descriptive and inferential statistics was used to describe the findings.The results showed that mean knowledge score of the respondents was 8.25 ±1.65 and mean practice score was 9.32 ±1.35. One fourth (25.7%) of respondents had high level of knowledge, high proportion (41.3%) of the respondents had moderate level and onethird (33.0%) had low level of knowledge. This study also revealed that only 16.5% had high level of practice, majority (72.5%) had moderate level and 11.0%had low level of practice. The correlation coefficient (r)between knowledge and practice was -0.050 and p-value was 0.605 which wasvery weak insignificant negative correlation. The study concludes that nurses has moderate level of knowledge and practice towards prevention of SSI. There is very weak insignificant negative correlation between knowledge and practice regarding prevention of SSI.Therefore it is suggested that educational and awareness programs is helpful to increase nurses' knowledge and practice regarding prevention of surgical site infections.
