Summary, etc. ABSTRACT:

Background
With the development of medical science, it is essential to prime medical students with knowledge of evidence-based medicine to produce competent medical professionals having rational decision-making skills. Our study aimed to calculate the prevalence of research involvement of undergraduate students and determine their perceived motivational factors and barriers to research involvement.

Materials and methods
This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate medical students of a medical college in Nepal. A proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used. A pretested self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data from 15th March to 4th May 2023. The collected data was entered and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.

Results
Out of 255 randomly selected participants, a total of 233 valid responses were obtained, giving a response rate of 91.37%. The participants involved in the research were 58 (24.9%) and all of them were from the clinical years. Among those involved in research activities, the motivation factor for research involvement for almost all participants (57, 98.3%) was the enrichment of curriculum vitae and help in the smooth conduction of the postgraduate thesis. Likewise, among those not involved in research activities, lack of knowledge and training in proposal writing (156, 89.2%) and lack of knowledge about research methodology (126, 72%) were the major barriers to research involvement.

Conclusions
Since the majority of the students were not involved in research, effective programs like integrating research into the undergraduate curriculum, adequate training, and grants targeted to undergraduate students should be formulated to increase the knowledge and skills required to practice evidence-based medicine.

Keywords: Cross-sectional study; medical students; research; Nepal.
