Summary, etc. INTRODUCTION
Cameriere's original formula, based on open apex measurements, is a reliable and clinically applicable method for estimating dental age in various populations of children. Dental development may differ between Nepalese children and other ethnic groups, influencing dental age accuracy using Cameriere's formula.
MATERIAL AND METHOD
A retrospective cross-sectional study of 260 good quality Orthopantomograms (OPCs) of 5-15 aged Nepalese children was collected from the archive of Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur, Nepal. OPGs were evaluated for No, S, and Xi morphologic variables with Image J software, which is a free domain. Dental age was calculated using Cameriere's original formula and compared to chronological age (CA). The multiple linear regression formula was used to modify Cameriere's formula to create a Nepalese formula. The same sample was used to verify the new formula's accuracy.
AIM
The objective of the study was to estimate the age of Nepalese children based on open apex measurement in the developing permanent dentition.
RESULT
Cameriere's original formula revealed -0.21 and -0.23 year underestimation of male and female dental age (DA) respectively (p <0.001). Linear regression analysis using the morphologic variables showed that first molar, first premolar, canine, central incisor, later incisor and No contributed significantly to CA yielding Nepalese specific formula. The new formula showed - 0.02 year female underestimation and 0.01 year male overestimation (p<0.001) which has a higher accuracy than the Cameriere's original formula.
CONCLUSION
The Nepalese formula was more accurate than Cameriere's formula in Nepalese children. The Nepalese-specific formula reduces the gap between CA and DA, yielding an accurate result that aids in forensic identification, effective diagnosis, and treatment planning for orthodontic and pediatric dentistry problems.
Keywords: Camerieres; dental age estimation; linear regression formula; Nepalese children; open apices.
