Summary, etc. ABSTRACT: The study on drug addiction was conducted among the drug users affiliated with Youth Vision in its different centers. The study design was descriptive cross sectional and the sample size was 82, among male users. The highest percentages of drug users were in the age group of 25-29. Most of the drug users were of Hindu religion and were Newars. Most of the respondents were unmarried. Most of the respondent lived in a single family. The educational status of the respondents and their parents was found to be low. Half of the respondents did not have any kind of occupation. The economic status of most of the respondents was found to be middle class. Above 90 percent of the respondents were found with the habit of smoking and less than 2 percent of them with the habit of drinking alcohol. Some 15 percent of the respondents had family history of drug use. Most of the users started using drugs in the age group of 15-19 years. Marijuana was the first used drugs for most respondents. Smoking and oral methods were the most common mode of use of drugs for the first time. About 95 percent of the respondents used the drugs with their friends during the first use. According to the respondents the main reasons for using drugs was fun/excitement/recreation/pleasure seeking. The pattern of use of drugs was seen to be multiple. Some of the used drugs were brown sugar, white sugar/opium/smack, tidigesic, tablets, cough syrups and marijuana. The mode of drug use was also multiple. Oral method, sniffing, chasing, IV/IM and smoking were the common mode for drug use. Brown sugar was the choice of drugs for most of the users. The main source of drugs for most of the users was the local drug dealer. Most of the respondents had been influenced by peer pressure for drug use and some 47 respondents showed criminal activities during use of drugs. The drug users faced discrimination from family members and relatives/neighbors. Some 67 percent of the respondents faced economic crisis for drug use. About 60 percent of them faced some kind of health problems after using drugs. Almost 71 percent of the respondents had a strong feeling of recovery staying in the rehab. About 97 percent of the respondents regretted that their habit of drug use was completely bad and harmful.
