Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT: Unmet need for family planning has been defined as the proportion of women who want to more children or want children only after two years but are not using any form of contraception. The contraceptive prevalence rate for modern methods is 54 percent in urban areas, compared with 43 percent in rural areas and new unmet need for contraceptive are 27.8 percent in 2001. Women living on squatter area are landless person (called sukumbasi) have low income and less access to contraceptives. The study of unmet need for family planning among the currently married women aged between 15-49 years of selected squatter area of Kathmandu. Total 132 respondents were taken as sample size from four different squatter area of Kathmandu i.e Balkhu, Shankhamul, Shamakhushi and Sinamangal. The total 54.5 percentage of respondent were literate and 45.5 percent weren't. Housework (65.2 percent) was main occupation of respondent and Wages (12.9 percent) was major source of income. Most of respondents (25 percent) were Brahmin/ Chhetri and 72.7 percentage of respondents had nuclear family and only 27.3 percent were from the joint family. Majority, 73.5 percent of total respondents, they followed the Hinduism, 12.9 were Christian, and 9.1 were Buddhist. Mean age at marriage of respondents was 18 years and mean age of respondent's husband was 23 years. Above 60 percent of women had experienced pregnancy below the age of 20 years. among the total respondents, almost all (about 90 percent) respondents had heard about the family planning and rest 9.8 percent hadn't and 26.1 percent Gap was found between ever use and knowledge and 45.4 percent gap was found in current users and their knowledge on FP. Highly gap was found in age group 40-44 years in case of currently use. About 34 percent unmet need had been found among the total desired women and 37.9 percent unmet need for birth spacing had been found among the women who had willingness to use but they hadn't. Similarly Unmet need for birth limitation had been found 32.7percent. |
