Knowledge and practice of abortion among the visitors in Marie Stopes Centre at Kathmandu.

ABSTRACT: After a decade of legalization of abortion still people are not aware that abortion is legal in certain conditions in our country.The main objective of this study was to know the knowledge about legalizations of abortions and its conditions among the people. This study was a descriptive cross sectional study. It was designed to assess the knowledge and practice of abortion among marie stopes visitors. Total 201 respondents were taken including 10 percent non response rate. Most of the respondents were of age group 20-30. The study showed that more than fifty percent of the respondents (59 percent) knew about legalization of abortion and about 25 percent did not knew about it. Among respondents who knew that abortion was legal 26 percent didn't knew about the condition for abortion. The findings of the study showed that about 45 percent respondents had the history of abortion. Half of them told that, already having desired number of child was the reason for abortion. All the abortions were carried out before 12 weeks of pregnancy and majority of them in marie stopes center. Among the total respondents 53.9 percent have heard about unsafe abortion. Among them only 15.6 percent have correct knowledge. Only about 25 percent of the respondents knew that infection in uterus, heavy bleeding, infertility and/or deaths are the complications of unsafe abortion.
