Prevalence of child marriage and its associated factors among married women of Kumal community of Rupa rural municipality kaski.

Child Marriage is expected to bring enormous health risk on health and wellbeing of women. This study was focused to examine the prevalence of child marriage, factors associated with it and it impact on Sexual and Reproductive health among women in Kumal community at Rupa Rural municipality, Kaski. Methods: Cross-sectional analytical study was conducted from Ashwin, 2079 to Jestha, 2080 among married women of Kumal community residing in Rupa Rural Municipality of Kaski district. Census was done due to limited availability of women of Kumal community. Face-to-face interview was data collection technique and semi-structured interview schedule was used as a tool. Data were collected through Kobo-collect and extracted to SPSS (Version 25) for analysis. Ethical approval was obtained from Institutional Review Committee and maintained during the process of research. Result: The prevalence of child marriage was found to be 68.4%. The mean age of the marriage was 18 years (IQR 3 years). More than three-quarters (76.7%) had appropriate knowledge of child marriage while more than nine-tenth states that its can be prevented. Low socioeconomic status was found to be one of the major factors of child marriage. The income of the family was seen to be associated with child marriage (AOR=0.302, p= 0.017). Most of the participants (47.3%) suggested the upcoming generations not to marry early. Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of child marriage in the Kumal community of the Rupa rural municipality of the Kaski district. The education and the economic status of early married women was not found to be satisfactory. Family having poor socioeconomic status had higher chance of child marriage in the Kumal community. Not only mother but also infants face different problems due to birth from teenage mother. Keywords: Child marriage, Prevalence, Kumal community, Nepal
