Quality and hygiene of sleep among elderly in a community.

Problem related to this have become one of the global health concern therefore, this study aims to identify quality and hygiene of sleep among elderlies within a community. A cross sectional research design with a quantitative approach was used, where 108 elderlies of Bagnaskali, Palpa were selected through non-probability consecutive sampling technique. Quality and hygiene of sleep were measured though Pittsburgh sleep quality index and Seep hygiene index. In-person structured interview with total 46 questionnaires translated in Nepali language was used for data collection from 7th- 21st August 2022 and the collected data were entered into SPSS 16 and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. This study revealed that 4.6% of respondent had good sleep hygiene with mean score 37.12±5.06. The overall sleep quality was poor among 87.1% where, 85.1% of respondent had sleep latency>15minutes, sleep efficiency was good among 91.6%, 77.7% had trouble in sleeping because of getting up to use bathroom. There was positive relationship between hygiene and quality of sleep with Karl Pearson r value 0.499 as well as sleep hygiene had significant association with age, sex, alcohol intake and meal to bed time. This study concluded that most of the elderly have poor quality and hygiene of sleep. So, it is advised that the importance of sleep hygiene practices among elderly people should be emphasized in order to improve sleep quality and promote healthy ageing as sleep hygiene have moderate positive relationship.
