总结:ABSTRACT: Globally, around 40% of adults aged 25 and over had raised blood pressure in 2008. About 30% of all deaths from heart disease in the U.S. are directly related to cigarette smoking. That's because smoking is a major cause of coronary artery disease especially in younger people. Hypertension affects about 1 billion individuals worldwide. In the United States the National Health and Nutrition Examination survey (NHANESI 1988-2000) reported that hypertension prevalence was 31.3% with an estimates of 65 million American having hypertension (Fields et al. 2004). Of hypertensive subjects 68.9% were found to be aware of their condition, 58.4% were on treatment and 31% had controlled their hypertension (Hajjar and Kotchen, 2003). A person's risk of heart attack greatly increases with the number of cigarettes he or she smokes and the longer a person smokes, the greater their risk of heart attack. People who smoke a pack of cigarettes a day have more than twice the risk of heart attack than non- smokers. Women who smoke and also take birth control pills increase several times their risk of heart attack, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease Hypertension is the only cause that claims the lives of the largest number of people in the world. Hundreds of thousands of people die due to brain hemorrhage, cardiac arrest and kidney diseases that result from hypertension. Excess intake of salt (sodium) is the major cause of high blood pressure. The society said the problem of hypertension can be reduced even by giving proper advice to the general public for reducing their salt intake. Every year, some 7 million people die due to hypertension and related causes, according to health statistics. Doctors have advised people to have their blood pressure measurements taken on a regular basis to ascertain whether they have hypertension problem.
